What Now?! – 4/7/2019

“President Trump took to Twitter Saturday to attack the latest barrage of investigations and subpoena threats from his political opponents on Capitol Hill,” Politico reports. In his Saturday tweets, the president repeated claims that the Mueller investigation was run by “13 Angry Trump hating Dems” who found no wrongdoing by him after spending “$30 million.” He added that the 22-month long probe was a “total waste of time.”

Then he should have no problem releasing the report to show us all how exonerating it is.

President Trump said he had not read special counsel Robert Mueller’s report investigating contacts between his 2016 campaign and Russia that his Democratic opponents say should be released in full, Reuters reports. Said Trump: “I have not read the Mueller Report yet, even though I have every right to do so. Only know the conclusions, and on the big one, No Collusion.”

He’ll never read it because it doesn’t pictures.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he will start extending Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank if re-elected prime minister in the election on April 9, Haaretz reports.

Said Netanyahu: “A Palestinian state will endanger our existence and I withstood huge pressure over the past eight years, no prime minister has withstood such pressure. We must control our destiny.”

Associated Press: “Pichone voted for Green Party candidate Jill Stein in 2016 and said she may vote for a third party again if Sanders doesn’t clinch the nomination.”

“She’s emblematic of a persistent group of Sanders supporters who won’t let go of the slights — real and perceived — from the last campaign. The frustration is notable now that Sanders is a 2020 front-runner, raking in $18.2 million in the first quarter, downplaying concerns about DNC bias and highlighting his success in bringing the party around on liberal policies it once resisted.”

“Some establishment-aligned Democrats worry the party could lose in 2020 if lingering concerns about the last primary aren’t put to bed.”

When you read this story, it becomes clear that, for these Sanders supporters, any result that doesn’t give Bernie a coronation this time will be illegitimate and the result of cheating. They sound like Trump.

What is he hiding? I won’t vote for him in the general election unless he releases 10 years of tax returns.

New York Times: “Three historically black churches have burned in less than two weeks in one south Louisiana parish, where officials said they had found ‘suspicious elements’ in each case. The officials have not ruled out the possibility of arson, or the possibility that the fires are related.”

“Barely three months into her second turn in charge, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has already mapped out a plan to overwhelm Republicans in the 2020 elections,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Pelosi: “I’m going to have our races won by this November.”

“Yes, the House speaker predicted that she will have locked down the majority a full year ahead of schedule, leaving the political battlefield to what she considers an intense presidential race all the way up to November 2020.”

Former Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-SC) died on Saturday, The State reports. He was 97.

“Better known as ‘Fritz’ Hollings, the South Carolina Democrat served in the state’s House of Representatives before becoming Lieutenant Governor in 1954. He was elected governor of the state in 1958. He won a special election for one of South Carolina’s U.S. Senate seats in 1966 where he served until 2003.”

Charleston Post & Courier: “In a career that spanned more than half a century, Hollings steered South Carolina through the civil rights era, established a program to feed poor pregnant women, enacted legislation to protect the environment and brought home millions of dollars as he also fought to balance the federal budget. No recent history of the state could be written without him in it.”

“One of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives in the United States… is a certain kind of rigidity where we say, ‘Uh, I’m sorry, this is how it’s going to be’ and then we start sometimes creating what’s called a ‘circular firing squad’, where you start shooting at your allies because one of them has strayed from purity on the issues. And when that happens, typically the overall effort and movement weakens.”

— Former President Barack Obama, quoted by The Guardian.

“A bill to let gun owners legally carry handguns without obtaining a state-issued license is dead after an activist, upset that the measure had stalled, was met last week by state troopers outside the Lake Jackson home of House Speaker Dennis Bonnen (R),” the Austin American Statesmanreports.

Bonnen said that the activist’s “gutless intimidation tactics” exposed no-license carry as a bad idea, dooming the legislation.

He added: “I could no longer watch as legislators and their families are incessantly harassed by fanatical gun-rights activists who think laws preventing criminals from carrying a gun should be repealed.”

Playbook: “There is a behind-the-scenes staffing tug-of-war in Iowa between Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg that likely will happen in other states as well. As both near officially entering the race, they are late to the operative game.”

“Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker laid the earliest organizational groundwork and others who have joined the field have scooped up top flight hires. One Democratic consultant said that while Buttigieg is capturing a new wave of excitement, Biden could have the upper hand because of long-term loyalties and relationships.”

Politico: “Do Democrats have to begin the process of impeaching President Trump in order to access special counsel Robert Mueller’s secrets? That legal debate began raging inside the House Judiciary Committee on Friday after a new federal court ruling suggested that Congress’ access to some confidential evidence — like the kind obtained by Mueller — hinges on lawmakers launching a ‘judicial proceeding.’

“Republicans on the committee say the only ‘judicial proceeding’ Congress can lead is an impeachment inquiry — a claim they say is backed up by legal precedent and history. Democrats would have to launch one against Trump if they want Mueller’s grand jury evidence, Republicans say. That interpretation would be problematic for Democratic leaders in Congress, who have little interest in launching a politically explosive impeachment process at the moment.”

House Democrats have filed a lawsuit aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from spending more money than Congress has approved to erect barriers along the southwestern border. Democrats say Trump’s attempt to transfer billions of dollars from several programs to wall construction violates the Constitution, which gives Congress control over spending. The 45-page complaint was filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls Trump’s act a “brazen assault” on the Constitution. Attorneys general from 20 states, plus environmental and progressive groups, have filed other lawsuits aimed at blocking the transfers.

  1. The Juxtaposition of the 2 Sanders stroies is great.
I agree about Bernie or Busters. They’re as bad as the NeverBernies who will flock to Howard Schultz and re-elect 45.
Vote for the Dem nominee or else you’re a bootlicker. Simple as that. (Unless its Tim Ryan)

    • Delaware Dem

LOL. That was intentional. But if the Bernie or Busters are going to refuse to vote Dem if the nominee is anyone but Bernie, then why should everyone else be loyal to Bernie?

      • what does that statement even mean, my dude?
By that logic, no one should have voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 because of the PUMAs in 2008.
Im not some Berniebro you can GET with a statement like that. I wanted the guy to yield the socialist wing to Warren and to spend the rest of his career making things difficult for smarmy worms like Chuck Schumer, but he’s apparently got a massive ego just like everyone else who runs for President…. everyone sucks. go figure.

But as far as “loyalty……No one should be loyal to anyone… at least no one should be loyal to any politician. If you are “loyal” to a politician, you’re a fool. That loyalty only goes one way.
I’ll vote for the Dem nominee…. because im not a dog-shit trump enabler and i care about my country more than political grudges….. but loyal? nah. you can leave that mindless sheepery at the pep rallies. I’m loyal to results and causes.

  2. So we aided Israel in the 1967 war not to enable Israel to defend itself, but to achieve a military conquest of Palestine, annexation to commence as soon as the right wing of Israeli to achieve hegemony over Israeli politics. The amount of lying coming out of Tel-Aviv, oops, I mean Jerusalem is equal to the noisome words coming out of the WH.

    • I don’t remember anyone in Israel who advocated this in 1967. The tipping point in Israeli politics seems to have been the assasination of Shimonoseki Peres, Israel’s historic peace advocate by a young right wing Israeli. The right has gained ground ever since, and is allied with Americans who can be pursueded to donate and support the hard right regime that now “governs”. Ham-fisted and cruel, and meddling in our politics as well. Resorting to murder when it suits them. Shame on Israel. You have managed to betray your place in history, and squandered the goodwill that was yours in the aftermath of the holocaust. You must turn away from your current leaders if you wish to be thought of as a liberal democracy by the rest of the world.

    • On the other hand, living in the time of and hearing the accounts of the 1967 war, I would NEVER surrender the Golan HEIGHTS to Bashir Assad. The are a military strategic point from which to defend Israel from Iranian/Russian/Syrian ground forces already operating in the area.

      • delacrat

Relaaaaax….Bashir Assad, Iranian/Russian/Syrian or whatever Official Enemy de jour are not gonna off-shore any US jobs to the Golan heights.

The ‘worst’ they’d do is end a Zionist occupation, and what’s not to like about that.

        • I was a junior in high school in 1967, and thanks to my teachers, was well informed about the 67 war. The Golan are strategic heights overlooking both Syria and Israel. Whose guns do you want on the heights? I vote for Israel, despite my loathing of Netanyahu and his cronies, including POTUS. My concern is not about giving the heights back to blood-soaked Assad, but rather the annexation of the West Bank, a move that is both immoral and stupid.

          • As long as King Bibi is in charge, “Israel’s guns” might as well be Russia’s. Corrupt as he is, expect a “landslide” win.
Really, Syria and Israel are nothing more than a wargame for Putin to test weapons and how much genocide the world community will tolerate. He controls both governments and won’t let that control go without a fight.
Didja notice how 45 amped up to an Iranian war today?
            Buckle up folks.

          • delacrat

If you want to know whose guns should be on the Golan, you should ask the Syrians on the Golan whose guns should be on the Golan.

  3. Dana Garrett

I don’t get Obama’s circular firing squad fear. Of course real progressives will vote for the Democratic nominee even if it’s a moderate like Biden. The alternative is Trump again. And I suspect Obama’s motives about wanting to see compromises between the Dem progressives and the Dem moderates. The compromise he wants seems to be the progressives giving the moderates some of what they want but not visa versa.

    • I find the voices in the Democratic center to be shrill and off-putting. The electorate is moving left on bread and butter issues. This should not throw Tom Perez into a panic, but it does. To describe AOC as a dangerous entity is to abuse Democrats, Independents, and some Republicans who see her as the centrist future. Less than one per cent of her remarks touch in deconstructing capitalism. The vast majority of her remarks go to working within America’s capitalist economic system. The folks at the head of the party have a choice. Embrace necessary restrictions on capitalist anything goes libertarianism or hurt yourselves and the party in 2020.

      • Did Tom Perez describe AOC as a dangerous entity?

        • I was paraphrasing. That is not a direct quote, no.

          • Not picking on you, but paraphrasing what?

            • I completely misspoke. It is the DCCC who are the anti-progressive assholes. Tom Perez said what I said, that AOC represents the future of the party. The articles I read suggest that establishment Dems see AOC as an unwelcome disruptive influence and are pushing back about “primary” rhetoric. I supported Kerri Harris in our last primary, and then held my nose and voted for Tom in the general. The DCCC must stop being so stupid. I think they are making the atmosphere more divisive than anyone else at the present time. Can we ever really be rid of Debbie Wasserman Shultz?

              • cassandram

The DCCC is frankly not material to any effort for “better Democrats” and never has been. They *are* doing their job, however. If you are going to get rid of DWS, you have to run someone who can beat her.

  4. “President Trump took to Twitter Saturday to attack the latest barrage of investigations and subpoena threats from his political opponents on Capitol Hill,”

“latest barrage” is an accurate description of what is taking place. The American people aren’t as inept as the Democrats would hope. After a multi year investigation with unlimited scope and financing, the Democrats have come up short on the whole Russian collusion nonsense. The fact that they continue the pursuit is making it clear to most people that the Democrats are in fact participating in a witch hunt. We are already into the next election cycle.

The Democrats need to start putting out their message instead of just looking to impeach Trump, and their message needs to be something more realistic and mature than just saying the world is going to end in eleven years and seven months, I think it is now, if we don’t let New York and Los Angeles decide the fate of the world…lol….I think a healthcare resolution is the best issue for both parties.

    • Did you read the Mueller report? Thought so.

      • no one is ever going to read the Mueller report and we’re never seeing trump’s taxes. The GOP spent all 8 years of Obama’s presidency making up fake scandals and demanding fake documents so they could pretend to “want to move past this kind of politics” when they were protecting their own from justice.
Focus on getting the truth out after we take the country back, but dont make that that goal.

        • We had the Pentagon Papers released by a very brave American, Dr. Daniel Ellsberg. Who will be as brave? Your country needs you.

        • cassandram

Which basically tells Dems in Congress to abandon their oversight responsibilities. When they were elected in part just so that there can be this oversight. If Dems are going to be the party of governing, then they should be working on oversight of the most corrupt administration of my lifetime.

        • delacrat

          “…we’re never seeing trump’s taxes.” – ben

Most Americans realize a look at trump’s taxes, won’t get them Medicare-for-All or anything else that materially benefit them.

          • cassandram

Every time I think you can’t get any stupider, you beat your own benchmark. Sheesh.

            • what exactly happens if we ever see his taxes?
Let’s assume there is proof of illegal activity… which would be tough.

              let’s think that one out.
              Here’s what WONT happen.

His base WONT turn on him
GOP reps WONT turn on him (see base)
His hand picked DOJ WONT charge him if theres anything.
People who know hes a crook WONT be shocked.
If trump backing white supremacist terrorists didnt move the needle nothing will.

It gains nothing. It reinforces what thinking people know to be true and will only bolster his cult. I think the guy committed treason. I support the legal penalty for treason.
But the only way we see his tax returns is if he is ousted, the GOP has fewer than 40 votes in the senate, and Kavanaugh is impeached and replaced.
If one thinks we are ever seeing his taxes while he is president, one is putting one’s faith in FUCKING REPUBLICANS and i feel bad for one.

              • cassandram

The only way you know what happens is for the taxes to be released. Dems are entitled to conduct oversight and they are entitled to ask for the law to be followed. Shrugging it off is what the GOP wants — for the Dems to abandon trying to govern so that the GOP can continue their kleptocracy.

    • Utter nonsense.
