So we saw the convicted criminal Auditor get her comeuppance last night, losing in landslide fashion to Lydia York. I am not going to say it is to her credit, because conceding graciously when you lose in a landslide or even if you lose in a close election is what you are expected and required to do, but it would appear that Kathleen McGuiness has conceded graciously and quickly rather than pull a treasonous Trump manuever.
It looks like State Represenative Nnamdi Chukwuocha has survived his primary with Shane Darby. He is leading by 90 votes and there is one small election district that has yet to report (the 17th).
In the 13th RD, challenger DeShanna Neal leads State Representative and Majority Whip Larry Mitchell by 24 votes with one small election district (the 12th) not reporting.
With these races so close, let’s talk about Delaware’s recount procedures. For general elections for state legislative and county-level offices, an automatic recount occurs when the margin is the lesser of 1,000 votes or 0.5% of votes cast. Recounts for statewide office must be requested if they fall within the same margins. I don’t know about primary elections.
Sophie Phillips defeated Martin Willis in the 18th RD for the right to succeed the retiring David Bentz.
In the 2nd RD, Stephanie Bolden easily survived a challenge from James Tyalor, 62% to 38%.
Cyndie Romer easily dispatched Ed Kilma in the 25th RD and would be a worthy successor for John Kowalko. The margin was 85%to 15%
Madinah Wilson-Anton and Eric Morrison coasted to 2 to 1 victory margins over their primary challengers in the 26th and 27th RDs respectively.
Debra Heffernan has survived the toughest primary challenge of her career, overcoming Becca Cotto by a 55-45% margin in the 6th RD.
Kerri Eveyln Harris surprised by garning two thirds of the vote in a four person field in the 32nd RD. She won 65% of the vote over Phil McGinnis’s 24%.
Kyra Hoffner prevailed in a five person field in the 14th SD. She won with 34% of the vote over Tater Hill Shaner’s 27%. Kevin Muston garnered 19%, Robert Sebastiano 11% and Sam Noel 9%.
On the Republican side in the 16th SD, Colin Bonini‘s legislative-no career is over. He came in third place with 22% of the vote to Kim Petters 27% and the next Senator Eric Buckson’s 51%.
Delaware Democratic Party Chair Betsy Maron on last night’s primary: “First and foremost I am glad that our party finally has a complete slate of nominees and an all female statewide ticket. Primaries are an important part of the electoral process that stimulate healthy discourse within our party. They determine the kind of party we want to be and offer a chance to make renewed commitments to our shared values, from the bottom up not the top down. I was incredibly proud to see Delaware Democrats hold the incumbent auditor accountable by electing Lydia York as our nominee. While other efforts to hold the incumbent accountable have been stalled, Delaware Democrats recognized her behavior for what it was, criminal and unacceptable, and rejected her defiant bid for re-election.”
“I also want to congratulate Lydia York on her victory. Earlier this year, the Delaware Democratic Party endorsed a primary challenger to a sitting incumbent, citing a need to restore integrity, accountability and true leadership to the position and I am glad that voters agreed. I have worked alongside Lydia many times in the past and have never once questioned her character or willingness to do the right thing even when no one is looking. When Lydia is elected in November the Auditor’s office will be in good hands.”
