House Passes Chiropractic Care Insurance Bill

Senate Bill 25 passed the House unanimously last month and it is on its way to Governor Carney’s desk. Senate Bill 25 ensures that chiropractic care that is covered by insurance is paid for at rates at least in line with Medicare or higher.

This is important in order to encourage the use of chiropractic care as an alternative to opioid medication to address pain issues many Delawareans experience. It is uniquely positioned as a treatment for back pain and chronic headaches, which a peer-reviewed medical journal has indicated are alarming drivers of opioid-related deaths. Other peer-reviewed studies have indicated that chiropractic physician care reduces opioid usage rates, costs significantly less than the opioid treatment path, and contributes to preventing addiction and overdose death.

In Delaware, back problems are a top-three cost driver and are among the most common conditions resulting in disability and lost productivity.

Making sure that chiropractic care is affordable and covered by insurance companies at Medicare reimbursement rates is an important step in promoting chiropractic are as that alternative to opioids. That is because currently, insurance companies that do cover chiropractic do so at low rates, forcing many chiropractors to charge high copayments, reduce care or not accept insurance payments at all.
