Ok, so we have just been through an election, and guess what, we won! We elected Joe Biden, and in Delaware, we elected new progressive legislators to our General Assembly. So that means we can rest and do nothing for four years, right?
Wrong. That is what we did after 2008, and it doomed progressives and Democrats in the 2010 midterms. That is what we did after 2012, and it doomed progressives and Democrats in the 2014 midterms. Getting involved in politics, fighting for what is right and for what is needed, fighting for progressive and liberal causes such as universal healthcare, college debt relief, progressive taxation, universal pre-K, $15 minimum wage, equality and a host of other worthy issues is a year round every year task.
You can take breaks, but you can never check out. And you can’t ever get disappointed when we face obstacles and setbacks – as we are sure to do – and then throw up our hands and say “forget this.” (Although most of us would use another F word there). Because the minute you do, guess who wins? Republicans and conservative or establishment Democrats who don’t want to have to deal with our holding their feet to the fire.
One of the most important things you can do as a Delaware progressive is to join your local Democratic Party’s Representative District (RD) Committee. The Delaware Democratic Party organizes itself mostly on the RD level, though there are City and County Committees as well. But the most effective use of your time is joining your local RD committee.
The Progressive Democrats for Delaware has organized a guide on how to join your local RD Committee. They are also having their online Monthly meeting via Zoom this coming Thursday, December 10 at 7 pm to talk about that process. I encourage to check it all out and to join your committees.
Would love to. As long as my state has revoked my right to vote from a felony conviction, I of course cannot. Thanks though.
That affects your right to vote (and that should be changed by the way), but not your ability to join a committee or go to committee meetings, unless you are standing on principle in saying that you won’t attend until your right to vote is restored.
Not all felonies are disqualifying, but membership on a committee requires being a registered Democrat AND not being registered as a member of another political party one year prior.
Meeting attendance is open to ALL registered Democrats.

Many folks with felony convictions can now vote, maybe even you.
Unfortunately, no, I am aware that my conviction falls into those disqualifying categories. I will have to lobby for a pardon, in time. It’s probably too soon, still.
