The Delaware Breakwater, with the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse, in Delaware Bay near Lewes. The breakwater was completed in 1869, after beginning 40 years earlier and running into silting issues, and was the third large breakwater in the world. It provided safe haven for ships by breaking the waves in Delaware Bay and creating a harbor for Lewes. The Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse was built in 1886. In the distance is the Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware’s official tall ship and a 1997 replica of the ship that brought the first settlers from Sweden in 1638. Photos by xzmattzx.
