According to the News Journal, beginning in July 2020, Christiana Care Health System will start offering paid parental leave to its 12,000 employees for the first time. This leave will apply to employees who are parents for the birth, adoption or fostering of a child.
“We know that the bond formed between mother and child in the first few weeks of life can have a tremendous impact on the health of the baby and the well-being of the family,” Dr. Janice Nevin, the health system’s CEO, said in press release. […] She urged other employers to follow suit. “While we understand that paid parental leave is an expensive benefit for employers to offer,” Nevin said in the release, “we hope that other organizations will consider taking this step to make a positive impact on the health and prosperity of our community.”
The Delaware General Assembly last year passed a bill providing for 12 weeks of parental leave for state employees, perhaps hoping that private employees would follow suit on their own without the legislature stepping in to require private employers to do so. Christiana Care’s move is a positive step in that direction and other private employers should follow their lead.
