Delaware City’s past is intertwined with the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal that runs through the town. After the canal was built in 1829, repairs would have to be made underwater to locks. The diving bell now in the center of Battery Park was built in 1839 to provide air for workers who made underwater repairs. In the background is the Delaware City Hotel, which was built in 1829 when the canal opened. Photo by xzmattzx.
