A new Monmouth poll finds that among a possible field of 19 announced and potential contenders, Joe Biden currently has the support of 29% of Democratic voters, followed by 16% for Sen. Bernie Sanders and 11% for Sen. Kamala Harris.
Other candidates who register support include Sen. Elizabeth Warren (8%), former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (7%), former Mayor Mike Bloomberg (4%), Sen. Cory Booker (4%), and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (2%). The other 11 candidates asked about in the survey receive support from no more than 1% of Democratic voters at this time.
A new Monmouth poll finds just 38% of registered voters think that President Trump should be re-elected in 2020. A majority of 57% say it is time for someone new in the Oval Office.
The party breakdown: 79% of Republicans back a second term for the president while 94% of Democrats say it is time for someone new. Meanwhile, 55% of independent voters want a change while 39% support the incumbent.
Interestingly, 43% of Republican voters and independents who lean Republican would like to see Trump face a primary challenge.
The poll also asked registered Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents about their party’s nomination process. In considering who should be their party’s standard bearer, a majority of 56% prefer someone who would be a strong candidate against Trump even if they disagree with that candidate on most issues. Just 33% say they would prefer a nominee who they are aligned with on the issues even if that person would have a hard time beating Trump. Democratic women (61%) are more likely than men (45%) to say they would put their policy positions aside in order to get a nominee who could beat Trump.
“In prior elections, voters from both parties consistently prioritized shared values over electability when selecting a nominee. It looks like Democrats may be willing to flip that equation in 2020 because of their desire to defeat Trump. This is something to pay close attention to when primary voters really start tuning into the campaign,” said [Patrick] Murray, [the director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute].
Big majorities of Americans want a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and oppose deporting all undocumented immigrants—in sharp contrast to Donald Trump.
A new Gallup poll finds a whopping 81 percent of people favor offering undocumented immigrants “the chance to become U.S. citizens if they meet certain requirements over a period of time,” while 61 percent oppose mass deportation. Both of those numbers have dropped slightly since 2016, but Trump remains very much in the minority.
Another key immigration number has gone the opposite direction in that time. A record high 30 percent of Americans want to increase immigration levels, just one point behind the number wanting to decrease immigration levels. What’s striking about this is that “Before Trump’s election, the percentage preferring a decrease in immigration averaged 31 points higher than the percentage wanting an increase.”
