Lesley Manor, on 7th Street at Deemer Place in New Castle. The house was built in 1855 for Allen V. Lesley, a surgeon. The house is one of Delaware’s best examples of Gothic Revival, and was once surrounded by scores of acres of countryside. The house is distinctive for having a nightwatchman’s room by the front door, who could summon the doctor for patients in the middle of the night, and for original gas lighting fixtures that date back to 1855, even though gas did not become available in New Castle until 1857. My friend owns this home. It is really an amazing place and has been lovingly restored over the past decade+.

No clue where liberalgeek gets his info from. House has been fully restored — by early 2006, when the previous owners sold it to the current owners. As far as I know, all the current owners did was to (a) close down and fill-up with earth the outdoor swimming pool and (b) put in a colossal-sized kitchen not quite appropriate to 1855 and Lesley Manor’s / Deemer Mansion’s grand style. Also, the current owners are active REPUBLICAN fundraisers. So, not sure where the “liberal, progressive and Democratic perspectives” would come into the picture here? probably nowhere, right? No big shake either way. It’s a grand old building that has weathered the tests of time for close to a century-and-a-half.
I’m the owner, and I’m not sure where you get your info from. We’ve done a whole heap more than just (a) and (b) The colossal “kitchen” was actually put in the original 1870 “kitchen” wing, so it’s very appropriate. In fact, some of the cabinets are exact replicas of ones that we took out and saved from that room. I’d also like to see where you get your info that we’re “active REPUBLICAN fundraisers”. There have been blue events here as well.
