Daily Delawhere for April 4, 2018

One of the most interesting hidden elements of Old Swedes Church in Wilmington is the lettering on the back wall, which is the east face. The lettering was wrought by smith Mattias de Foss, and reads, “LUX L.I. TENEBR. ORIENSEX ALTO”, or “Light from on high shines in the darkness.” The letters were installed in 1698, and are allegedly unique in all of North America as an extant example of a full-length inscription on a colonial building.  Photo by xzmattzx.
