The Open Thread for March 26, 2018

The much-anticipated 60 Minutes interview aired last night on CBS.  Here is the transcript.

Washington Post: “The adult film star offered little new evidence for her allegation of a 2006 affair with Donald Trump, but described the intimidation strategies she claims were used to silence her since she first sought to tell her story in 2011, including a threat against her young daughter.”

I was kinda let down, because we already knew all the major details already.  Oh well.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) told CNN that students protesting for gun control legislation would be better served by taking CPR classes and preparing for active shooter scenarios.  Said Santorum: “How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that.”

Funny, I never knew CPR could fix gunshots to the head.

Sources have told City&State PA that Rep. Ryan Costello (R-PA) has decided not to seek reelection in Pennsylvania’s hotly contested 6th congressional district.

“Despite filing petitions on Tuesday to run for another term, four Republican sources said Costello indicated at a recent meeting with state and local GOP officials that he intends to drop out of the race in the weeks before the May Primary.”

CNN: “With Costello bowing out, there is currently one other candidate, Greg McCauley, a local tax attorney, seeking the Republican nomination, while Chrissy Houlahan, an Air Force veteran, former teacher and former business and nonprofit executive, is the lone Democrat in the 6th Congressional District race.”

Jonathan Swan: “John Bolton knows he’s being portrayed as a warmonger as he becomes national security adviser, but he’s trying to build internal credibility with a more studied, lower-decibel approach, according to people familiar with his thinking. Bolton’s forest of op-eds trumpet his hawkish views. But my sources say that at least at the outset, Bolton plans to rein those in — aiming to be seen more as an honest broker for the war cabinet, and less as blatant advocate.”

President Trump “has decided not to hire two lawyers who were announced last week as new additions to his legal team, leaving him with a shrinking stable of lawyers as the investigation by the special counsel, Robert Mueller, enters an intense phase,” the New York Times reports.

Said lawyer Jay Sekulow: “The president is disappointed that conflicts prevent Joe diGenova and Victoria Toensing from joining the president’s special counsel legal team. However, those conflicts do not prevent them from assisting the president in other legal matters. The president looks forward to working with them.”

“With passage of an enormous budget bill, the GOP-controlled Congress all but wrapped up its legislating for the year,” the AP reports.  “But will it be enough to convince voters to give Republicans another term at the helm?”

“There are signs Americans wanted more: immigration reforms, gun control legislation, even an infrastructure plan that President Trump promised voters. Tax cuts, for now, will have to do.”

“But in that final month on the trail, there was something else weighing on Trump’s mind, even more than the assault allegations. According to three top campaign officials, speaking to the Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations, Trump began pressing senior staffers about the specific dates that the women were alleging that the assaults, affairs, or harassment took place.”

“If the date fell within the time period of the early stage of his marriage to Melania Trump—and the birth of their son Barron—Trump would suddenly care more about the story and quiz campaign aides more closely about it. Officials concluded that Trump’s true concern was not so much being accused of sexual harassment as it was, in the words of one aide, about ‘pissing off Melania.’”

A new Pew Research study looks at the growing divide in party identification based on educational attainment, gender, and generation.  The most striking finding is that the Democratic advantage among millennial women has soared from roughly 20-points in 2014 to 47-points last year.

Here are a few more highlights:

  • Democrats have a stunning 27-point advantage with millennials overall.
  • The share of women identifying with Democrats increased from 51% in 2010 to 56% in 2017.
  • The share of whites identifying with Democrats increased from 42% to 46%, although 51% are still Republican identifiers.
  • Democrats enjoyed a 15-point advantage with college degree holders in 2017, up from a one or two point advantage in 2014.
  • 46% of Democrats identify as liberal, the highest share of the party to do so since 2000 (though still notably a minority of the party).

A new Ogden & Fry poll in Illinois finds J.B. Pritzker (D) running way ahead of Gov. Bruce Rauner (R)  in the governor’s race, 46% to 28%.  Key finding: Rauner’s approval rating is a dismal 32% to 68%.

Gov. John Kasich (R) told CNN that lawmakers should be held accountable during this fall’s midterm elections for their inaction on gun laws following a number of high-profile mass shootings around the country.  Said Kasich: “I think people should be held absolutely accountable at the ballot box.”

Stan Collender: “No one used the word while this bill was put together, but there should be no doubt that ‘earmarks‘ — money set aside for a specific purpose — were used extensively to buy votes. Some were the traditional small amounts for a particular state, district, industry or company; others were the inclusion of whole programs. Either way, they were almost precisely what congressional Republicans, led by former Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), swore to stop doing.”

  1. I hope Anderson kept an eye on his valuables, but seriously this was obviously all about publicly primping a case for why “Stormy Daniels” broke the confidentiality agreement, and now I’m sure some chucklehead will want an inquiry into whether the situation involved any high crimes and misdemeanors by Trump, which I’m sure was the motivation for the interview in the first place…And the embarrassment of course.

Anderson Cooper’s brand has been cheapened even more now,(I think he fancied himself as a credible journalist at one point), and if everything works out, “Stormy” can now go on to make her “million”.

    • I know stormfront does not report everything, so I’m not surprised you don’t know, but, he used campaign cash (you, know, the stuff he got from Russia via the NRA) to pay her off…. so…

But.. we agree rarely on this….. That is, I too don’t want to hear anymore about this affair unless there is more news that he broke the law. It isn’t doing anything to make the MAGATs love him less, it isn’t AT ALL a surprise, and it sucks the air of of the room for more important stories.
45’s sex life is getting more (albeit a just a little) air time than gen Z’s takedown of the GOP/NRA and it’s fucking disgusting. Is there a tape? I hope not.

“Why don’t you want there to be one, you ass hole? I knew you were a secret trump loving bernie-bot” – random person

Because tr*mp is the type of pig to get off on knowing people saw him. If he’s into being humiliated, as has been speculated, part of him is loving this… and that’s gross. Also… here is a hard pill for some to swallow. Revenge porn is always wrong. Doesn’t matter who it is.

If having an affair is what brings him down, and not all the other horrible shit he has managed to do in the last 14 months, it doesn’t mean we’ve gotten any better as a country. It just means the rot is so deep, not even a cancerball like 45 can survive.

      • “I know stormfront does not report everything, so I’m not surprised you don’t know..”

I had to look up what “stormfront” was…. You know, “ben”, not everybody is a ravenous fringe lunitic like yourself.

It’s definitely about the coverup. Definitely. It is also about the hypocrisy. Convervatives went bat-shit crazy over every woman who accused Bill Clinton of adultery. Heck, GRIFTUS has hosted most of those accusers at debates and SOTU addresses.

        • Coverup? Of course there was a coverup, a legal coverup in the form of a non disclosure agreement.

Trouble for Trump would be if “Stormy Daniels” was physically threatened, and if there was proof that Trump knew about it, and, or if there was any campaign finance violations in the way that Stormy Danials was compensated.

    • …And apparently she may have been jacked up on something during the interview ( major pupil dilation under bright lights).

      • So then you can relate?

      • Priceless! Mr. “I make up BS about teenagers” RSE now peddles a new conspiracy.

        • Actually, pandora, the BS is when YOU insist that teenagers organized “March for Our Lives”

Do any of these people look like teenagers to you? :

          http://www.capegazette.com/article/march-our-lives-set-march-24/153349

          • Is that a serious comment? You’re basing your latest conspiracy on Lewis and Rehoboth? Those are wonderful spin-offs of the main march in DC.

I get that discrediting teens is the hill you’ve chosen to die on, but this tactic employed by you, the NRA and Trump supporters tells me these kids have you scared. The Parkland teens led the way and many (many!) others joined their cause. You can’t address their points so you try and discredit them.

            “…a mother, grandmother, a teacher of 35 years …”

Surely a nefarious character, you think George Soros is behind her as well ?

  2. Politicians have yet to learn the lesson of Bill Clinton, although it is contrary to their deepest instincts Honesty Is The Best Policy, admit what you did and apologize and avoid the traditional months of being raked over the coals. That will not happen with Trump and it seems Melania is pissed to the max, wonder why. Don’t think it will go as far as the first presidential divorce, then again ya’ never know. And on a lighter note John Bolton now seeks to remake his salivating war monger image. Suggest he shave off his mustache and proclaim “Look Ma! No mustache and no thirst for endless war!”.

There’s more to that Fox News poll on guns — not the least of which is that voters think protecting against gun violence is more important than protecting gun rights by a 13 point margin (53-40 percent). 57% oppose arming teachers and school admins. And this poll was done before the March for Our Lives rally this weekend. It is worth reading the whole thing.

The screen shot from Fox above is really worth its weight in gold. Copy it and send you your Delaware Senate and House representation and tell them you agree with this. Pass the common sense bills in front of the GA now.

  4. Funny, after Stormy got to talk and the kids got millions to march, Trump is suddenly trying to change the narrative by expelling Russian spies. What dirt on hime do we have to tout in order to get him to do other good things for the country?

    • Trump just wanted to join in with all the European nations that are giving the Russians the boot, poisoning your political enemies in England doesn’t go over very well. Dare say the staff had to twist Trump’s arm to get him to do it.

“Said Santorum: “How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes…” – CNN

Instead of renewing the Oil and Gas subsidies, Congress should recommend that Exxon should invest in CPR training.

What I think is telling is that same people who lambasted this generation as “Generation Tide Pod” are now lambasting them for asking and accepting help in accomplishing their goals. From ‘they can’t do anything for themselves!” to “why didn’t they do it all themselves?!”

Asking for help in accomplishing your goal is seen as a controversy/conspiracy. Still wonder how RWNJs keep from falling on their faces from dizziness with all that spinning they have to do.
