Weakened Minimum Wage Bill On the Agenda

On the Senate Agenda today is Senator Bob Marshall’s SB10, which, as originally drafted, would raise the minimum wage 0.50 cents in each of the next four years (2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, so that it is eventually $10.25 in 2020.  Right now, the minimum wage is $8.25 an hour.  However, Senator Marshall has introduced an amendment that guts his bill and then only raises the minimum wage to $8.75 per hour effective October 1, 2018, and to $9.25 per hour effective October 1, 2019.

Talk about negotiating against yourself.  Marshall is allegedly running for reelection.  And he intentionally weakens his own bill to make it more business-friendly and conservative?  Good luck winning that primary, Bob.   I am of half a mind to encourage Democrats to vote no on this bill.   But something is better than nothing.

Hey Bryon Short, you aren’t running again, and don’t have to cowtow to your corporate overlords.  Do us all a favor, introduce an amendment raising the minimum wage to $12.00 by 2022.

On Thursday, the Senate will vote on Senator Bushweller’s Casino Tax Relief Bill,  as well as HB174, Larry Mitchell’s bill to increase penalties on strawman purchases, and HB300, the bump stock ban.  Both HB174 and HB300 already passed the House, so passage in the Senate without amendment will send both bills to the Governor.

  1. Gee, what a surprise, the chamber of commerce wins and gets their stingy and short sighted way. Why not raise the minimum wage a penny a year as the ultimate symbol of contempt for the people who actually work and actually get something done? Yet again it’s obvious that the number of actual Democrats in this state are few and far between.

It looks good to be seen praying for a higher minimum wage.

    • Actually it’s a moment of silence for the death of good government and the resulting triumph of money in politics.

“I used to work at McDonald’s making minimum wage. You know what that means when someone pays you minimum wage? You know what your boss was trying to say? “Hey if I could pay you less, I would, but it’s against the law.”
