Governor Jack Markell has released a very well produced, and good, video detailing his accomplishments in office. It is entitled ‘Markell’s George Bailey Moment’, and premised upon the story of George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life.
And here is his final Weekly Address wherein he expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the state and reflecting on how far we have come since he took office during the Great Recession.
“You have constantly inspired me with determination, ingenuity, love, and commitment, and we can be proud that together, we have made our state more beautiful, more productive, more prosperous, and more inclusive than ever before,” said Governor Markell. “Serving as your Governor has been the honor of my life, and I will never forget the kindness and generosity you have shown me and my family in times good and challenging. Thank you for all you do for our state and each other, and for your commitment to keep Delaware moving forward.”
Governor Markell was a good Governor. He was disappointing in some areas, namely the economy, corporate welfare and income equality. He was good to great in areas, namely marriage equality and non-discrimination. We wish him well and thank him, Carla and his family for their service to the First State.
He was also disappointing when it came to education. We really need the people who make education policy to have attended, or have their child attending, traditional public schools. The disconnect on this issue is stark.
Markell was a mixed bag.
When politicians leave office the local papers run stories thanking them for their “service”, in Delaware that means service to the corporations that run the show from behind the scenes, not the people of Delaware. Markell is no different, he’s a corporatist like Coons and arch bank worshipper Tom Carper. Having said that I view Carney as a big step down and a good example of what’s wrong with today’s Democratic party. Predict when the tax cut for the rich game is played again he’ll be a cheer leader, and not fighter for the rest of us.
Markell has been a complete failure!! He pushed money into failing companies; Fisker, which by the way is building cars in CA. Sevone, Bloom Energy, (Which has more job openings in CA than in Delaware!).
He should have put the money into infrastructure, instead of failing companies!
